Sleater-Kinney
Dig Me Out · 1997
Sleater-Kinney formed in Olympia, Washington in 1994, emerging from the riot grrrl scene's DIY, explicitly feminist punk tradition without ever quite settling inside its boundaries. Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein's interlocking guitars — trading melody and rhythm roles rather than fixing either player into a single function — gave the band's sound an unusual urgency, with no bassist to fall back on and both guitarists' voices often overlapping in tense harmony.
Dig Me Out (1997), the band's third album and first with drummer Janet Weiss, sharpened that interplay into some of the most immediate songwriting of their career, trading some of the earlier records' rawer edges for tighter arrangements without losing any of the intensity. The album became a critical breakthrough that established Sleater-Kinney as one of the definitive American punk bands of the decade, and the trio's steady evolution across the records that followed kept them at the center of conversations about American underground rock for years afterward.
