Lush (2018)

Lush pairs Jordan's clean, technically assured guitar playing with a flat, deliberately unadorned vocal delivery that makes the songs' emotional peaks land harder for how little they're oversold. "Pristine" builds from a simple verse into a chorus where her voice finally opens up, singing "I'll never love anyone else" with a directness that avoids any hint of irony. "Heat Wave" shows the same restraint applied to a slower, more resigned song. Recorded at eighteen, it treats teenage heartbreak with a technical seriousness few records aimed at the same subject bother to attempt.

Lush · 2018

Lindsey Jordan began writing songs as a teenager in Maryland, playing in the DIY scene around Ellicott City before releasing Lush (2018) at eighteen years old to widespread critical acclaim. Her guitar playing, more technically accomplished than much of the lo-fi indie rock she was initially grouped with, combined with lyrics about first love and heartbreak delivered in a flat, unadorned voice that gave the songs an understated intensity.

Jordan has continued to develop her sound on subsequent records, incorporating more polished production and a wider range of influences while keeping the emotional directness of her debut intact. Lush in particular has remained a touchstone for younger guitar-based songwriters for the way it treated teenage heartbreak with a seriousness and technical care that few of her contemporaries brought to similar subject matter.
