Pottymouth (1993)

Pottymouth runs its songs fast and loose, Allison Wolfe's yelped, conversational vocal riding deliberately scrappy garage-pop arrangements that never aim for polish. "Cool Schmool" carries the album's wit at its sharpest, turning teenage social anxiety into something genuinely funny without losing its bite. The whole record sounds like it was recorded in a single excited take, an urgency that studio refinement would only have dulled. It stands as one of riot grrrl's clearest full-length statements, as much a document of a scene's ethos as a collection of songs.

Bratmobile formed in Olympia, Washington in 1991 when Allison Wolfe and Molly Neuman began writing a zine together before deciding to start a band, becoming, alongside Bikini Kill, one of the two acts most closely tied to riot grrrl's earliest days. Their sound stayed scrappier and more overtly playful than some of their peers, built on Wolfe's yelped vocals and a deliberately unpolished garage-pop energy.

Pottymouth, their debut album, arrived in 1993, gathering the same wit and lo-fi urgency that had defined their earlier singles into a full-length statement. The band broke up not long after, with Wolfe and Neuman each pursuing other projects, before reforming in the late 1990s and again in the early 2000s for further records ahead of a final split. Bratmobile's contribution to riot grrrl's founding vocabulary, much of it worked out through zines as much as songs, has remained as significant as anything on their records.
