Goat (1991)

Goat pairs David Yow's genuinely unhinged vocal presence with a rhythm section disciplined enough to make the chaos feel engineered rather than accidental. "Mouth Breather" rides a lurching, off-kilter riff from Duane Denison while David Wm. Sims's bass anchors the whole song against collapse. Steve Albini's dry, unglamorous production strips away any hint of studio polish, leaving the band's menace fully exposed. It's an album that sounds dangerous specifically because the musicianship underneath it is so tightly controlled.

The Jesus Lizard

Goat · 1991

The Jesus Lizard formed out of the wreckage of Scratch Acid, bringing vocalist David Yow and bassist David Wm. Sims together with guitarist Duane Denison and drummer Mac McNeilly for a version of noise rock built on menace and control rather than pure chaos. Yow's live performances — climbing into the crowd, seemingly on the verge of real violence — became as central to the band's reputation as the music itself, a physical extension of the band's confrontational sound.

Recorded and produced by Steve Albini, whose dry, punishing engineering style suited the band perfectly, Goat (1991) captured a band operating at a level of tightness that belied its chaotic reputation: Denison's angular riffs and Sims's muscular bass gave Yow's unhinged vocals a rigid frame to detonate inside. The Jesus Lizard's influence runs through nearly every noise-rock and heavier post-hardcore band that followed, admired as much for the band's discipline as for its danger.
