Since 1992 · United States

Olivia Tremor Control formed in Athens, Georgia around Bill Doss and Will Cullen Hart, two of the founding figures of the Elephant 6 Recording Company alongside childhood friend Jeff Mangum, and their music combined the collective's shared love of 1960s psych-pop songcraft with a genuinely experimental streak that ran toward musique concrète, tape collage, and extended sound manipulation. Dusk at Cubist Castle (1996)

Dusk at Cubist Castle alternates fully arranged pop songs with disorienting tape-collage interludes, treating melody and noise as tools from the same box rather than opposing instincts. "Jumping Fences" leans into the pop side of that equation, its bright, layered harmonies carrying real 1960s psych-pop craft even as the production stays gleefully lo-fi. The album's structure — song, then experiment, then song again — makes the whole record feel like a single continuous experience rather than a sequence of tracks. It stands as one of the most complete statements of the Elephant 6 collective's dual love of pure pop and genuine sonic strangeness.

Dusk at Cubist Castle · 1996

Olivia Tremor Control formed in Athens, Georgia around Bill Doss and Will Cullen Hart, two of the founding figures of the Elephant 6 Recording Company alongside childhood friend Jeff Mangum, and their music combined the collective's shared love of 1960s psych-pop songcraft with a genuinely experimental streak that ran toward musique concrète, tape collage, and extended sound manipulation. Where some of their Elephant 6 peers kept the experimentation mostly in the margins, Olivia Tremor Control built entire album sides out of it, treating noise and pop melody as materials from the same palette.

Dusk at Cubist Castle (1996), the band's debut, set that combination in its most fully realized form, alternating fully arranged pop songs with disorienting instrumental interludes built from tape loops and studio effects. The album's mix of accessible melody and genuine sonic experimentation became one of the most direct statements of the Elephant 6 aesthetic as a whole, and its influence has been felt by later artists — including much bigger acts like Radiohead and the Flaming Lips — who found in it a model for treating pop songwriting and studio abstraction as compatible rather than opposed.
