Neutral Milk Hotel
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea · 1998
Neutral Milk Hotel formed around Jeff Mangum, who moved to Athens, Georgia to be near a circle of like-minded musicians doing bedroom recordings steeped in the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the Kinks — the loose collective of friends and collaborators that became known as the Elephant 6 Recording Company. Mangum's songwriting fused that 1960s psych-pop foundation with a raw, distorted lo-fi production style and an increasingly surreal, image-dense lyrical approach that set the band apart from its more straightforwardly melodic Elephant 6 peers.
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998) drew its central inspiration from an unlikely source: Mangum has spoken about reading Anne Frank's diary and being consumed by the idea of a time machine that could somehow save her, and that fixation runs through the album's oblique, emotionally overwhelming lyrics even where it's never stated outright. The album found only a modest audience on release before Mangum largely withdrew from public performing, and its slow-building rediscovery over the following decade turned it into one of the most influential and most emphatically cited records in American indie rock, inspiring musicians who would go on to found bands including Arcade Fire and the Shins.
