Superfuzz Bigmuff (1988)

Superfuzz Bigmuff crams a handful of blown-out, feedback-soaked garage-punk songs into a short, exhilarating EP that helped define Sub Pop's earliest sound. It arrived the same year as the standalone single "Touch Me I'm Sick," whose fuzzed-out riff and gleefully sick lyrics became the song most identified with the band's early run even though it never appeared on the EP itself. Together they capture Mudhoney at its rawest, treating volume and distortion as ends in themselves rather than obstacles to a hook. Taken as a pair, the two releases remain the clearest document of grunge's underground, pre-fame moment.

Superfuzz Bigmuff · 1988

Mudhoney formed in Seattle in 1988, quickly becoming one of the foundational bands on the newly launched Sub Pop label and a key architect of the sound that would soon be marketed worldwide as grunge. The band has cited the Wipers directly as an influence, and their own fuzzed-out, garage-indebted guitar sound became a direct template for much of what followed out of the city; Kurt Cobain named Mudhoney his favorite band.

Superfuzz Bigmuff, released in 1988, was one of Sub Pop's very first releases and helped define the label's early identity. Mudhoney continued recording and touring for decades afterward, largely avoiding the mainstream breakthrough that reshaped the careers of several of their Seattle peers, and have remained closely associated with the noisiest, least polished end of the grunge sound they helped originate, outlasting many of the peers who overtook them commercially.
