Get to Heaven (2015)

Get to Heaven pairs Jonathan Higgs's most anxious, densely packed lyrics yet with some of the band's most immediate, hook-driven arrangements, letting genuine unease hide inside deceptively bright production. "Distant Past" pushes that contrast furthest, its sci-fi-tinged lyric and propulsive rhythm section carrying real dread underneath an almost celebratory melody. Higgs's falsetto stays the constant thread running through arrangements that otherwise swing between math-rock angularity and full-throated pop. It stands as the record where the band's art-rock instincts and pop ambitions finally arrived at the same time.

Get to Heaven · 2015

Everything Everything formed in Manchester in 2007 around Jonathan Higgs's dense, wordy lyrics and startling falsetto, building a sound that fused art-pop ambition with math-rock's angularity while still chasing genuinely widescreen hooks. Their debut, Man Alive, arrived in 2010, followed by Arc in 2013, each record pushing the same collision of intricate arrangement and pop instinct a little further into the mainstream without ever quite arriving there.

Get to Heaven, their third album, arrived in 2015, the band's darkest and most anxious record, its lyrics processing a broader unease about the state of the world rather than anything narrowly personal. The band continued releasing music steadily afterward, maintaining the same tension between accessible melody and unsettled subject matter that Get to Heaven had sharpened. Everything Everything's catalog has remained more critically embraced than commercially dominant, a reliably strange presence in British guitar music.
