Duster
Stratosphere · 1998
Duster formed in San Jose, California in 1996 around Clay Parton and Canaan Amber, later joined by drummer Jason Albertini, recording in a home studio on cheap four-track equipment that became inseparable from the band's aesthetic: hazy, low-fidelity, deliberately unresolved. Where much of the surrounding indie rock of the era aimed for clarity or immediacy, Duster's songs drifted, fuzzy and unhurried, closer in spirit to slowcore and early space rock than to anything resembling a hook.
Stratosphere (1998) is the clearest statement of that aesthetic, a record that found almost no audience on release and only gradually accumulated one through word of mouth and, decades later, a surprising resurgence among younger listeners who discovered it online. The band quietly dissolved in the early 2000s before reuniting in the late 2010s, newly aware of an audience that had found them long after the fact and was considerably larger than the one they'd had the first time around.
