Codeine
Frigid Stars LP · 1990
Codeine formed in New York City around 1989, playing a stripped-down, deliberately unhurried version of indie rock that helped define what would come to be called slowcore: minimal arrangements, tempos slowed almost to a stop, and a sense of weight built through restraint rather than volume. Where much of the underground rock of the era prized speed and noise, Codeine's music sat in near-silence, each note given room to decay before the next arrived.
Frigid Stars LP (1990) established that aesthetic fully formed, and though the band released only a small handful of records before disbanding in the mid-1990s, their patient, minimal approach proved durably influential — audible in a wide range of later bands, from other explicitly slowcore acts to the more hushed corners of midwest emo and indie rock, who found in Codeine's deliberate pacing a template for turning quietness itself into a compositional tool.
