House of Sugar (2019)

House of Sugar folds Alex G's bedroom-pop instincts into denser, stranger arrangements, pitch-shifted vocals and queasy, off-kilter twang sitting alongside genuinely pretty melodies. "Gretel" pairs a plainspoken, almost folk-song structure with production that keeps tilting the ground underneath it, never settling into a single genre. The record trusts unease and prettiness to coexist in the same verse without resolving the tension. It remains the clearest document of Giannascoli's move from raw home recordings toward something more meticulously constructed without losing the strangeness that made the early tapes compelling.

House of Sugar · 2019

Alex Giannascoli began releasing music as Alex G from a childhood bedroom outside Philadelphia, uploading a steady run of lo-fi folk, pop, and warped country songs to Bandcamp through his teens and early twenties with no label involved. His hushed, often pitch-shifted vocal delivery grew partly out of necessity — he has cited Elliott Smith's own whispery singing directly, explaining that it made staying in tune easier and, as a practical bonus, let him record without waking his roommates.

That homemade catalog eventually found a wider audience, and after years of self-releasing directly to Bandcamp, Giannascoli signed a record deal; he now records for RCA, though the guitar-forward, detail-heavy songwriting hasn't been smoothed out by the move. House of Sugar, released in 2019, arrived well into that shift from bedroom experimentation toward denser, more unsettling arrangements. He has also been known to play Ween over the venue PA before his own shows, a habit that says as much about his sensibility as any interview.
