Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You (2022)

Recorded across four different studios and stitched into a single sprawling double album, Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You moves between hushed acoustic songs and looser full-band takes without ever feeling like two separate records. "Simulation Swarm" rides a loping, slightly off-kilter groove while Lenker's lyrics drift between the concrete and the cosmic. "Certainty" and "Change" show the quieter end of the record, close-mic'd and unpolished in a way that reads as intentional rather than accidental. It's an album built on the idea that imperfection and intimacy are the same thing.

Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You · 2022

Big Thief formed in Brooklyn around the songwriting of Adrianne Lenker and quickly built a reputation as one of the more restlessly productive bands in contemporary indie rock, releasing four albums between 2016 and 2019 alone. Their sound moves fluidly between hushed, intricate folk arrangements and looser, more ragged full-band rock, often within the same record, held together by Lenker's plainspoken, image-dense lyrics and voice.

Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You (2022), a sprawling double album recorded across four different studios with four different engineers, is generally considered the fullest expression of the band's range, moving from spare acoustic songs to full-band excursions without any sense of the record straining to hold itself together. The band's willingness to leave rough edges — audible room noise, imperfect takes — in the final mixes has become part of their identity.
