Fabulous Muscles (2004)

Fabulous Muscles pairs Jamie Stewart's most unflinching lyrics yet with arrangements that swing between skeletal electronics and sudden orchestral swells, never settling into a single texture for long. "I Luv the Valley OH!" carries that contrast at its most extreme, a tender, almost childlike melody set against lyrics that confront trauma and desire with total directness. The production throughout stays raw enough that nothing feels aestheticized or safely distanced from its subject matter. It remains the album most responsible for establishing Xiu Xiu's reputation as one of experimental pop's most confrontational and influential voices.

Fabulous Muscles · 2004

Xiu Xiu formed around Jamie Stewart in San Jose, California in 2002, building a catalog defined by unflinching, often disturbing lyrical content set against a constantly shifting instrumental palette that has moved between skeletal acoustic arrangements, harsh electronics and orchestral drama from one album to the next. Stewart has remained the band's sole constant across dozens of collaborators, giving unusually candid interviews about the personal material behind the songs.

Fabulous Muscles, their third album, arrived in 2004 and became the record most widely credited with establishing the band's reputation, pairing that confrontational songwriting with some of their most accessible arrangements to date. The band has continued releasing music at a rapid pace in the two decades since, moving through dramatically different sonic phases while keeping the same commitment to lyrical directness. Xiu Xiu's influence has surfaced widely among later artists working in confessional and experimental pop alike, even where the band's own commercial profile has stayed modest.
