Saint Cloud (2020)

Saint Cloud trades Waxahatchee's earlier lo-fi rock for a warmer, countryfied sound, pedal steel and organ filling in space where distortion used to sit. "Fire" turns a simple, repeated vow into the record's emotional center, Katie Crutchfield's voice steady and unguarded over a spare, twangy arrangement. The songwriting favors plainspoken directness over metaphor throughout, structured in short, direct verses that skip the conventional bridge almost entirely, trusting plain statement over ornament. It's the sound of a songwriter fully in command of the American tradition she draws from.

Saint Cloud · 2020

Katie Crutchfield records as Waxahatchee, taking the name from Waxahatchee Creek near her childhood home in Alabama, after earlier fronting the punk-leaning band P.S. Eliot. She has cited Lucinda Williams as her single most direct songwriting influence, saying her own approach to structure is "identical to Lucinda" and noting that, like Williams, she rarely writes a bridge into her songs. Crutchfield has also recorded Jason Molina covers, on the Great Thunder EP, tracing another line back through American songwriting's plainspoken tradition.

Saint Cloud, released in 2020, arrived after a period of major personal change, including a newly sober outlook that reshaped Crutchfield's songwriting and life alike. The album became her most widely praised to date, read by many as the record where her literary influences and the plainspoken American songwriting tradition she draws from finally arrived at a fully formed voice of her own.
