The Sound
Jeopardy · 1980
The Sound formed in London out of an earlier band, the Outsiders, with Adrian Borland emerging as its guitarist, singer and primary songwriter. Borland wrote with a rawer emotional directness than most of his post-punk peers, drawing on the Stooges, David Bowie and Can as much as any UK scene, and building songs that moved between tightly wound tension and sudden, cathartic release.
Jeopardy, their debut, appeared in 1980 to strong reviews that never translated into commercial success, a pattern that dogged the band through several more albums and label changes across the decade. Borland struggled with depression for much of his life, and the band effectively dissolved by the late 1980s as his mental health worsened; he died in 1999. The Sound's near-total commercial obscurity relative to their acclaim has made them one of the era's most frequently rediscovered bands.
