Tame Impala is the recording project of Kevin Parker, a Perth-based musician who writes, performs, and produces essentially every element of the music himself, building a sound that moved from heavily effected, guitar-driven psychedelia toward increasingly dance- and pop-oriented production over the course of his catalog. Currents (2015)

Currents trades Tame Impala's earlier guitar-driven psychedelia for synthesizer-heavy, groove-forward production closer to disco than to rock. "The Less I Know the Better" rides a slinky, funk-inflected bassline into a chorus about jealousy and self-doubt delivered with a warmth that undercuts the lyric's discomfort. Kevin Parker's total control over every element of the production gives the record a singular, cohesive feel despite its stylistic distance from his earlier work. It remains the album most responsible for bringing Tame Impala's psychedelic sensibility to an audience far outside rock's usual boundaries.

Parker has described his own sense of influence expansively, crediting the impact of everything he's ever heard, including things he wasn't consciously aware were shaping him — citing the Beatles and Britney Spears as examples in the same breath, despite admitting he's never actually listened through a full album by either.

Currents (2015) marked the most decisive turn in that evolution, largely abandoning the guitar-centered psychedelic rock of his earlier records for synthesizer-driven, groove-forward production closer to disco and modern pop. The album became Parker's most widely heard and most influential work, reaching audiences well beyond psychedelic rock's usual boundaries and reshaping expectations for what a solo bedroom-pop project could achieve commercially.
