The Marías

Since 2016 · United States

The Marías formed in Los Angeles in 2016 around María Zardoya and Josh Conway, building a sound that draws far more heavily on R&B, soul and Latin pop than on the indie-electronic tradition they sit adjacent to, with Zardoya moving fluidly between English and Spanish across the band's catalog. Submarine (2024)

Submarine wraps María Zardoya's smoky, unhurried vocal in lush, reverb-heavy production that owes as much to classic soul and bossa nova as to any dream-pop lineage. "No One Noticed" carries that blend at its most immediate, a warm, mid-tempo groove giving Zardoya's voice room to stretch without ever rushing the song's languid pace. The album stays committed to that same hazy, unhurried mood throughout, rarely raising its voice even at its most emotionally direct. It stands as the record that carried the band's sound to its widest audience yet without sanding down what made it distinctive.

The Marías

Submarine · 2024

The Marías formed in Los Angeles in 2016 around María Zardoya and Josh Conway, building a sound that draws far more heavily on R&B, soul and Latin pop than on the indie-electronic tradition they sit adjacent to, with Zardoya moving fluidly between English and Spanish across the band's catalog. Their sound leans on hazy, reverb-heavy production and Zardoya's smoky, unhurried vocal delivery, closer in spirit to classic soul and bossa nova than to any strictly electronic lineage.

Submarine, their second full-length album, arrived in 2024, expanding the band's sound to a fuller, more expansive scale than their earlier, more intimate releases. The band has continued touring and recording steadily since, building a large and rapidly growing audience largely through streaming rather than any single crossover moment. The Marías now sit at the edge of several different scenes at once, claimed by dream-pop, R&B and Latin pop audiences without belonging fully to any one of them.
