Choke Enough (2025)

Choke Enough gathers Oklou's hushed, softly glitched approach to pop songwriting into her first full-length statement, prioritizing intimacy and melody over the louder, more maximalist tendencies of the scene she's often placed within. "blade bird" is characteristic of the record's tone, a fragile vocal melody set against production that glitches and stutters without ever overwhelming the song underneath it. The album favors quiet, close-mic'd vocal performances over the pitched, processed extremity found elsewhere in contemporary hyperpop-adjacent pop. It's a record that makes a genuinely persuasive case for restraint inside a scene generally associated with excess.

Choke Enough · 2025

Oklou is the recording name of Marylou Mayniel, a French musician whose early mixtapes and EPs built a hushed, softly glitched style of ambient pop, closer in spirit to whispered lullabies than to the louder, more maximalist end of hyperpop she's sometimes grouped with. She developed those early releases largely independently before working more closely with collaborators including A.G. Cook and Danny L Harle.

Choke Enough (2025), her full-length debut studio album, gathered that hushed, glitch-inflected approach into a more sustained, cohesive listen without sacrificing the intimacy of her earlier work. Oklou has pushed back publicly on comparisons to more overtly maximalist hyperpop artists, describing her own music as closer to classic pop songwriting filtered through unconventional production. She remains one of the more distinct voices to emerge from the loose, internet-connected network of producers surrounding PC Music and its associates, precisely because her music resists that scene's most obvious signatures.
