I Love You Jennifer B (2022)

I Love You Jennifer B keeps swinging between Georgia Ellery's tender, string-laden songwriting and Taylor Skye's glitchy, maximalist production, often within the same song rather than across separate tracks. "Concrete Over Water" carries that tension especially clearly, its plaintive vocal melody riding a bed of production that keeps threatening to overwhelm it before pulling back at the last moment. The album never resolves the friction between its two halves, treating that instability as the whole point rather than a flaw to smooth over. It remains one of the most distinctive debuts to come out of its scene precisely because it refuses to sound like anyone else in it.

I Love You Jennifer B · 2022

Jockstrap formed in London when Georgia Ellery and Taylor Skye met while studying at the Guildhall School of Music, pairing Ellery's classically trained violin and songwriting against Skye's glitchy, electronic production instincts. Ellery's parallel membership in Black Country, New Road only underlined how porous the boundaries were within the wider Windmill-adjacent scene, though Jockstrap's sound pulled in a very different direction, closer to chamber-pop collapsing into digital noise than to guitar rock.

I Love You Jennifer B, their debut album, arrived in 2022 to wide critical acclaim for how comfortably it moved between genuinely tender songwriting and abrupt electronic disruption. The duo continued developing that push-and-pull afterward, touring the record widely and treating genre boundaries as something to dissolve rather than respect. Jockstrap's music has remained difficult to categorize by design, refusing to settle into either its chamber-pop or its electronic half.

On the bill

Formed out of the Guildhall School rather than the Windmill circuit itself, but Georgia Ellery's parallel membership in Black Country, New Road made the two bands' overlap concrete rather than just a shared bill.
