Glow On (2021)

Glow On fuses hardcore's speed and aggression with melody, groove, and a spacious, almost pop-adjacent production that few bands in the genre had attempted. "Blackout" pairs a chugging, hardcore-rooted riff with a soaring, genuinely catchy chorus, refusing to treat heaviness and hookiness as incompatible. The record moves fluidly between blast-beat intensity and moments of near-danceable groove without the shifts ever feeling forced or gimmicky. It remains the album most responsible for pulling Turnstile, and hardcore more broadly, toward a much wider and more varied audience.

Glow On · 2021

Turnstile formed in Baltimore in 2010, emerging from a hardcore lineage that runs directly back through Bad Brains and Minor Threat even as the band pushed steadily outward from that tradition's usual boundaries. Early releases stuck closer to the tradition's conventional attack, but the band's sound kept absorbing outside elements with each successive release, without ever fully cutting ties to the scene it came up in.

Glow On, released in 2021, completed that transformation into something that drew in listeners well outside hardcore's usual audience while never fully abandoning the genre's intensity. The record's genre-blurring success became part of its own story, sparking ongoing debate within the scene about whether Turnstile still belonged to hardcore at all or had simply outgrown the label entirely, a question the band itself has never seemed especially interested in resolving one way or the other.
