Prefab Sprout
Steve McQueen · 1985
Prefab Sprout formed in County Durham in the late 1970s around Paddy McAloon, still a teenager when he began writing the ornate, literate songs that would define the band's catalog for decades afterward. McAloon's ambitions ran toward complex chord changes and dense wordplay more than anything resembling straightforward pop, and the band spent its early years refining that sensibility before finding a producer able to match it.
Steve McQueen, produced by Thomas Dolby, arrived in 1985 and was retitled Two Wheels Good for its American release after the actor's estate objected to the original title. The band continued recording steadily through the 1990s and beyond, refining the same ornate style across further albums, before McAloon's declining eyesight and worsening tinnitus pushed him toward long stretches of isolation, releasing music only sporadically since. Prefab Sprout's catalog remains a quietly influential outlier, more revered by songwriters than widely known by audiences.
