D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L pairs shoegaze's guitar haze with a lo-fi, homemade production that four teenagers assembled with barely any equipment. Its title track drifts between fuzzed-out guitar and unsteady, half-buried vocals, the disc rot that degraded the only surviving copy adding an unintended layer of static that now feels inseparable from the recording itself. Nothing about it was engineered to be discovered decades later, which is precisely what makes its eventual rediscovery so striking. It stands as proof that a genuinely great record can simply wait, unheard, for the right accident to find it.

Panchiko

D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L · 2000

Panchiko formed in Nottingham around 1998, when four teenagers self-released roughly thirty copies of a CD-R blending shoegaze fuzz with lo-fi bedroom production, got no response from labels or press, and quietly disbanded within a couple of years. The record vanished so completely that it might have stayed forgotten forever had a single copy not surfaced sixteen years later in a Nottingham charity shop.

Whoever found it posted the degraded, disc-rot-damaged audio to 4chan's /mu/ board in 2016, and a community search effort formed around the only clue available: four first names printed on the back cover. By then the members had scattered into entirely separate careers and lives, having long assumed the record would never be heard by anyone outside Nottingham. The band was tracked down and reunited in January 2020, decades after they'd first given up on it. Panchiko's whole story runs backward from most bands' — discovery came first, and only then did a career.
