Crumbling (2018)

Crumbling layers acoustic guitar, field recordings and warped electronic production into a dense, headphone-rewarding collage that rewards repeated listening more than any single pass. "These Chains" folds a genuinely pretty vocal melody into a constantly shifting bed of samples and texture, never settling long enough to feel predictable. The whole album favors accumulation over hooks, treating each song as a small, detailed world rather than a single statement. It remains the release most responsible for building Mid-Air Thief's reputation as one of psychedelic pop's most quietly ambitious voices.

Mid-Air Thief is the recording name of Kenny Suh, a Korean-American musician who began releasing dense, collage-like psychedelic pop from relative obscurity before slowly building an online following through word of mouth. His music layers acoustic guitar, sampled sound and electronic production into something that resists easy placement within either American indie or Korean pop traditions, drawing on both without settling into either.

Crumbling, his debut album, arrived in 2018 after Suh spent years assembling it largely alone, and its detailed, headphone-rewarding production gradually found an audience well beyond what its quiet initial release suggested. He has given very few interviews since, keeping most of his creative process private even as the record's reputation grew. Mid-Air Thief's small catalog remains under-documented relative to its actual influence, a gap that owes as much to the artist's own reticence as to any lack of interest from listeners.
