You'd Prefer an Astronaut (1995)

You'd Prefer an Astronaut buries melody under layers of thick, downtuned guitar, the two never quite competing so much as fusing into a single dense texture. "Stars" pairs Matt Talbott's detached, almost weightless vocal with a guitar tone heavy enough to fill a room, the contrast giving the song a pull that heavier and lighter bands alike have chased since. The record sits at an unusual midpoint between shoegaze's atmosphere and alternative rock's muscle. Decades on, its guitar tone alone remains a reference point for bands trying to sound simultaneously massive and hazy.

You'd Prefer an Astronaut · 1995

Hum formed in Champaign, Illinois in 1989, led by guitarist and vocalist Matt Talbott, developing a sound that layered heavily processed, downtuned guitars with melodic, almost dreamy vocal lines — a combination that placed the band at the intersection of shoegaze, space rock, and the heavier alternative rock of the era without fitting comfortably into any single one of those categories.

You'd Prefer an Astronaut (1995) brought the band its widest recognition, its dense wall of guitar and Talbott's detached, melodic delivery finding an audience on rock radio and television that few of their underground peers reached. Hum's sound — massive, textured guitar tones paired with an almost shoegaze-like sense of atmosphere — proved durably influential on later heavy alternative and post-shoegaze bands even as the group itself moved in and out of activity over the following decades, releasing only sporadically while its reputation continued to grow among musicians who cited them directly.
