The Warning cover

Start here

The Warning (2006)

The Warning is where Hot Chip's early bedroom-pop melodicism met a much more confident, clubby production sensibility. "Over and Over" rides a simple, insistent cowbell pattern and a chanted vocal hook that turns repetition itself into the song's main event, a deadpan nod to Kraftwerk's own motorik pulse. "Boy from School" slows things down into something more melancholic, proving the band could sustain a mood as well as a groove. The album's blend of wit, warmth, and genuinely danceable production made it one of the more purely enjoyable records to come out of mid-2000s British electronic-pop.

The Warning · 2006

Hot Chip formed in London in the early 2000s around Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard, who had known each other since attending Elliott School in Putney — a comprehensive school that, by coincidence, produced several other electronic musicians of their generation. Their early records mixed deadpan, almost bedroom-pop vocal melodies with dance and R&B production, a combination that read as more sincere than ironic despite the band's evident sense of humor about itself.

The Warning (2006) turned that mixture into something considerably more physical, built around thicker, clubbier productions without losing the melodic core. Hot Chip have kept recording steadily since, moving between records that lean toward song-based electronic pop and others that push further into dance music proper, while Goddard and Taylor have also pursued production and DJ work outside the band. Few groups from the same period have sustained that particular balance of warmth and rhythm for as long.
