FKA twigs
LP1 · 2014
FKA twigs, born Tahliah Barnett, began releasing music from London in the early 2010s, having worked previously as a backup dancer, and built a sound around hushed, technically intricate vocals set against skeletal, texturally adventurous production. Her early EPs drew immediate comparisons to Björk and other art-pop antecedents, though her own stated influences run more toward R&B and dance music than any single lineage.
LP1, her debut album, arrived in 2014 to widespread critical acclaim and a Mercury Prize shortlisting, establishing her as one of the decade's most distinctive new voices in art-pop. She has continued releasing music and pursuing acting work in the years since, expanding her sound across further albums while keeping the same commitment to meticulous, unhurried production. FKA twigs has remained one of the clearest reference points for a generation of art-pop and R&B-adjacent artists who followed her.
