Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time (2013)

Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time wraps dense, reverb-soaked guitar textures around a loose concept about geological time and the natural world, favoring immersive atmosphere over conventional songwriting. "Pangaea Girls" carries that mood clearly, its washed-out guitars and half-buried vocal drifting along without ever resolving into a sharp hook, more interested in accumulation than statement. The whole record rewards long, uninterrupted listening more than individual tracks pulled out on their own. It stands as the clearest distillation of a band more interested in mood and scale than in radio-ready songwriting.

Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time · 2013

Candy Claws formed around Fort Collins, Colorado in the mid-2000s under the direction of Ryan Hoover, building a hazy, richly layered take on shoegaze and dream-pop steeped in the sound of My Bloody Valentine and, by Hoover's own account, the more obscure Starflyer 59. The band's records lean heavily on dense guitar textures and reverb-soaked production, favoring atmosphere and repetition over conventional song structure.

Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time, their third album, arrived in 2013, built loosely around themes of deep geological time and the natural world. The band has released only sporadically since, sustained by a small but devoted following built almost entirely through word of mouth rather than wider commercial attention. Candy Claws' catalog remains a minor but genuinely distinctive entry within American shoegaze, more cited by fellow musicians than widely known outside the genre's smaller circles.
