Ariel Pink
Before Today · 2010
Ariel Pink began recording alone on an eight-track Portastudio as a teenager, accumulating well over 200 cassettes of warped, degraded pop between 1996 and 2003 before any of it was formally released. He has cited the sound of The Cure's Faith as a formative discovery, saying it "typified everything I wanted to be, which is mediocrity, ambiguity, totally serious and totally helpless" — a description that doubles as a fair account of his own aesthetic.
Before Today, released in 2010, marked his move from cassette-only obscurity into a full studio setting and a wider audience. Pink has since been widely credited as a godfather of hypnagogic pop and chillwave, genres built directly on the woozy, half-remembered pop sound he spent years perfecting alone. That influence has persisted even as his own career has remained defiantly hard to categorize, veering between genuine pop craft and deliberate provocation in roughly equal measure.
