Tricky
Maxinquaye · 1995
Tricky, born Adrian Thaws, grew up in Bristol and was part of the Wild Bunch sound-system scene as a teenager, later contributing guest vocals to Massive Attack's Blue Lines (1991) and Protection (1994) before starting a solo career of his own. His debut, Maxinquaye (1995), took its title from his mother, Maxine Quaye, who died when he was a young child, and its songs draw heavily on that loss alongside more oblique, paranoid lyrics delivered in his distinctive murmured half-rap.
Much of the album's actual singing was done by Martina Topley-Bird rather than Tricky himself, his lyrics filtered through her voice to create a deliberately unsettled, androgynous effect that became one of the record's most distinctive features. Tricky continued recording prolifically through the following decades, moving through denser, more abrasive material on records like Pre-Millennium Tension (1996) and later returning to sparer, more reflective songwriting. His catalog is large and uneven by his own admission, but Maxinquaye remains the record most listeners return to first.
