The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety (2005)

The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety builds entirely instrumental songs out of interlocking, technically demanding guitar lines that never feel merely cerebral. "Goodbye" pairs a rippling, melodic guitar figure with busy, propulsive drumming, the two constantly trading momentum without ever losing the song's emotional pull. Where much of instrumental math rock prizes complexity for its own sake, toe keep every part in service of an actual melody. It's an album that made the genre's technicality feel warm rather than academic.

The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety · 2005

toe formed in Tokyo in 2000, led by guitarist Hirokazu Yamazaki — also a member of the influential Japanese rock band Bloodthirsty Butchers — alongside a lineup built around intricate, largely instrumental compositions. Drawing on American math rock and post-rock as much as on Japan's own experimental guitar scene, toe built songs out of interlocking, technically demanding guitar parts and busy, melodic drumming, rarely relying on vocals to carry the emotional weight of a track.

The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vast Plain (2005) established the band internationally as one of the most distinctive voices in instrumental math rock, its combination of technical precision and genuine melodic warmth setting it apart from more purely cerebral entries in the genre. toe's steady international touring and continued releases in the following decades helped build a bridge between the American math-rock and midwest-emo scenes that had influenced them and a wider global instrumental-rock audience discovering the genre through them.
