Spiritualized
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space · 1997
Spiritualized formed in the early 1990s around Jason Pierce following the dissolution of his earlier band Spacemen 3, carrying forward that band's interest in repetition, volume, and drone while expanding the palette considerably — incorporating gospel choirs, horn sections, and orchestral arrangements alongside walls of guitar feedback. Pierce's songwriting paired druggy, transcendent imagery with an underlying gospel and soul sensibility, giving the band's most expansive recordings a quality somewhere between a rock show and a religious service.
Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space (1997) brought that maximalist approach to its most fully realized studio statement, layering full choirs and horn sections over the band's core drone-rock foundation to create something considerably larger in scale than most guitar-based rock of the period. The album's combination of raw emotional directness and enormous, almost orchestral production became the record most closely associated with Spiritualized, and Pierce continued pursuing variations on the same widescreen, gospel-inflected rock across the records that followed.
