Becoming X (1996)

Becoming X pairs Kelli Ali's cool, detached vocal with Liam Howe and Chris Corner's dense, cinematic production, closer in spirit to Massive Attack's paranoid sprawl than Portishead's torch-song intimacy. "6 Underground" is the clearest distillation of that sound, its stalking bassline and looping guitar sample carrying the album's biggest hook without ever losing the record's overall chill. The rest of the album stays in a similarly nocturnal register, favoring mood over obvious singles. It remains the release most responsible for carrying Bristol-style trip-hop production into mainstream UK chart success.

Becoming X · 1996

Sneaker Pimps formed in Southampton, England in 1994 around producers Liam Howe and Chris Corner, later adding singer Kelli Ali, and arrived directly in the wake of Massive Attack and Portishead's early-1990s Bristol trip-hop breakthrough. The band's sound leaned into the same hip-hop-derived beats and cinematic atmosphere, though with a colder, more electronic edge than either of their acknowledged touchstones.

Becoming X, their 1996 debut, became a UK chart success on the strength of "6 Underground," a song reworked into a more radio-friendly single mix after the album's initial release. Ali left the band shortly afterward, with Corner taking over lead vocals for the records that followed, before the group eventually dissolved and its members moved into other projects, most notably Corner's later work as IAMX. Sneaker Pimps remain most closely associated with a single commercial peak rather than a long career arc, but that peak captured trip-hop's crossover moment about as precisely as any other record from the period.
