Mono
Hymn to the Immortal Wind · 2009
Mono formed in Tokyo in 1999, building a sound around slow-building instrumental compositions that pair guitar-driven post-rock dynamics with full orchestral arrangements, a combination that set the band apart from most of its genre peers from early on. Their music favors long, patient crescendos that can stretch a single piece across ten minutes or more, moving from near-silence to full orchestral and guitar climaxes with a classical composer's sense of pacing.
Hymn to the Immortal Wind (2009) brought the orchestral side of the band's sound to its fullest realization, recorded with a live ensemble rather than layered studio strings, and the album's combination of guitar-band intensity and orchestral scope became one of the clearest statements of post-rock's more maximalist, cinematic wing. Mono's steady international touring in the following years helped introduce a new generation of listeners to the genre's Japanese lineage alongside better-known Western acts.
