Bury Me at Makeout Creek (2014)

Bury Me at Makeout Creek marks Mitski's turn from composition-school art-pop toward full-band indie rock, the arrangements rougher and louder than anything on her earlier records but the songwriting no less exact. "First Love / Late Spring" opens quiet and swells into a chorus that reads as both devotional and slightly unhinged, Mitski's voice cracking exactly where the lyric needs it to. "Drunk Walk Home" leans further into distortion without sacrificing the melodic clarity underneath. It's the record where her classical precision and her rock instincts first fully met.

Bury Me at Makeout Creek · 2014

Mitski Miyawaki self-released two albums of art-song-influenced music while studying composition before Bury Me at Makeout Creek (2014) marked a turn toward a more guitar-driven, indie-rock sound, recorded with a full band for the first time. Her lyrics combine blunt, often self-lacerating emotional directness with a formal precision that reflects her classical training, frequently building a whole song around a single, sharply drawn image or confession.

Subsequent albums — Puberty 2 (2016), Be the Cowboy (2018), Laurel Hell (2022) — moved between raw guitar rock and more polished, synth-inflected pop without losing that same directness, and Mitski has become one of the most influential songwriters of her generation among younger confessional and indie artists, several of whom cite her directly as a formative discovery.
