La Dispute
Wildlife · 2011
La Dispute formed in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2004, part of a loose, self-mocking cluster of bands sometimes called the "new wave of post-hardcore" alongside acts like Touché Amoré and Defeater. Vocalist Jordan Dreyer's delivery — closer to spoken-word storytelling than conventional singing or screaming — set the band apart, giving their songs a narrative density more common to literary fiction than to hardcore's usual directness.
Wildlife (2011), structured as a loose concept album exploring grief, violence, and small human tragedies across a series of interconnected narratives, remains the band's most fully realized work, Dreyer's storytelling matched by increasingly dynamic, post-rock-influenced arrangements from the rest of the band. La Dispute's combination of literary ambition and post-hardcore intensity made them a significant reference point within the 2010s post-hardcore and "skramz"-adjacent underground, admired as much for the emotional weight of their lyrics as for the music surrounding them.
