Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven · 2000
Godspeed You! Black Emperor formed in Montreal in the mid-1990s as a shifting collective rather than a fixed band, often numbering eight or nine musicians on stage and releasing early records with little interest in individual credit. Their compositions unfold over extended, multi-part suites built from slowly accumulating string and guitar drones, field recordings, and spoken-word samples, favoring a patient, almost orchestral build toward moments of overwhelming volume rather than anything resembling a conventional song structure.
The band's music carries an explicitly political and apocalyptic sensibility, informed by the members' involvement in Montreal's DIY and activist scenes, and their reluctance to give interviews or explain their intentions directly only deepened the mythology around records like Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven. Released on the Constellation Records label the band helped establish as a hub for the city's post-rock and experimental scene, their work — along with related projects like A Silver Mt. Zion, formed by several of the same musicians — helped define post-rock's more maximalist, orchestral wing at the turn of the millennium.
