Preacher's Daughter (2022)

Preacher's Daughter tells a loose narrative across its runtime, moving from bright, almost radio-ready songwriting toward increasingly bleak, ambient territory as its story darkens. "American Teenager" is the record's clearest pop moment, a driving, anthemic chorus wrapped around lyrics about small-town disillusionment and looming dread. Later tracks strip that brightness away almost entirely, replacing it with distorted guitar drones and extended ambient passages. The contrast across the album's length is the whole point — a coming-of-age record that ends up somewhere far darker than where it started.

Preacher's Daughter · 2022

Hayden Anhedonia began releasing music as Ethel Cain in the late 2010s, building a devoted online following before Preacher's Daughter (2022) brought her a considerably wider audience. Raised in a religious household in Florida, she has drawn directly on that background — evangelical Christianity, small-town Southern life — for a fictional narrative persona that runs across her records, blending gothic Americana, ambient textures, and pop songwriting into a sound distinct from any single genre.

Preacher's Daughter, a loosely narrative concept album following its title character's life and death, combines shoegaze-indebted guitar textures with more straightforwardly melodic songwriting, and its scope and ambition established Cain as one of the more closely watched new songwriters of the early 2020s, drawing comparisons across gothic country, dream-pop, and confessional singer-songwriter traditions alike.
