Arca (2017)

Arca's self-titled third album is her most vocally driven record, built around operatic, often multi-tracked singing in Spanish rather than the purely instrumental abstraction of her earlier work. "Piel" pairs a fragile, exposed vocal melody with production that keeps threatening to dissolve underneath it, tension between voice and instability running through the whole song. "Anoche" and "Reverie" apply the same approach at different emotional registers, one more urgent, the other closer to lullaby. It's the record where Arca's structural interest in collapse and reformation became explicitly personal rather than purely sonic.

Arca · 2017

Arca, born Alejandra Ghersi in Caracas, Venezuela, first became widely known as a producer, working on Kanye West's Yeezus (2013) and on a run of albums by Björk beginning with Vulnicura (2015) before her own solo career drew comparable attention. Her early instrumental albums, Xen (2014) and Mutant (2015), built dense, structurally unstable electronic music out of abrupt textural shifts and sounds that seemed to be actively falling apart mid-track.

Her self-titled 2017 album marked a significant turn: her first record built primarily around her own singing voice, largely in Spanish, and considerably more direct about identity and vulnerability than her earlier, more abstract instrumental work. The sprawling Kick series (2020–2021) that followed moved between club-facing reggaeton-adjacent material and some of her most extreme, abrasive sound design yet, often within the same release. Arca has continued to work prolifically both as a producer for other artists and under her own name, treating genre boundaries as something to be actively dismantled rather than respected.
