Was It Just a Dream? (2013)

Was It Just a Dream? collects everything Talulah Gosh recorded in their two years: singles, radio sessions and demos. Their theme song, "Talulah Gosh", sums them up, a fast, bright jangle with Amelia Fletcher's sweet voice racing the drums. Under the cuteness is a punk band, and "Break Your Face" charges like the Ramones they loved. It's the sound that gave twee pop both its name and its bite.

Was It Just a Dream? · 2013

Talulah Gosh formed in Oxford in 1986 after Amelia Fletcher and Elizabeth Price met, both wearing badges for the Pastels. With Peter Momtchiloff, Rob Pursey and Fletcher's brother Mathew, they set sixties girl-group tunes to the speed of the Ramones and sang them sweetly over the top, a mix they called their two main influences.

The music press mocked them as childish, and the word thrown at them, "twee", went on to name a whole genre. Price left in 1987 and became an artist, winning the Turner Prize in 2012; the band split in 1988, and most of its members regrouped as Heavenly the following year.
