Dead Kennedys
Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables · 1980
Dead Kennedys formed in San Francisco in 1978 around the sardonic, theatrical vocals of Jello Biafra and East Bay Ray's twangy, surf-inflected guitar, a combination that gave the band's hardcore a satirical, almost cabaret edge distinct from the straightforward aggression of their peers. Biafra's lyrics took aim at American politics, consumerism, and complacency with a directness that got the band banned from venues and, later, prosecuted on obscenity charges over an album insert.
Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables (1980) established the template: fast, riff-driven hardcore married to lyrics that worked as both punchline and genuine political critique. The band split acrimoniously in 1986 amid disputes over licensing and royalties, but Biafra's continued activism and East Bay Ray's melodic, spring-loaded guitar style left Dead Kennedys as one of the most quoted and most argued-over bands in hardcore's early history.
