Charm (2024)

Charm trades bedroom-pop's laptop intimacy for a room full of players, cut live to analog tape with Leon Michels and a band pulled from the soul and jazz session world. It's warm and unhurried in a way Clairo's earlier records never tried to be, moving between soft rock, jazz and psychedelic folk without ever tipping into pastiche. "Sexy to Someone" is the thesis in miniature: a loose, sunlit groove carrying a lyric about wanting a reason to leave the house. It's the record where the internet's most famous bedroom artist stopped sounding like a bedroom at all.

Claire Cottrill began posting lo-fi bedroom-pop recordings online as a teenager, and the unexpected viral success of one such song brought her a wide audience before she had released a proper album. Immunity (2019), produced with Rostam Batmanglij, moved her sound toward fuller, more considered arrangements while keeping the intimate, conversational vocal style of her earlier bedroom recordings.

Cottrill has continued to develop a warmer, more acoustic-leaning sound on subsequent albums, drawing increasingly on 1970s soft-rock and folk influences she's cited from her parents' record collection. Her trajectory — from viral bedroom-pop artist to a songwriter working in dialogue with an older folk and soft-rock lineage — has made her a frequently discussed example of how that internet-era path can develop into a more traditional singer-songwriter career.
